Today we strolled the streets of Old Town Heidelberg. It seems every European city has a Castle and a Cathedral and Heidelberg was no different.
And of course there are picturesque alley ways and gingerbread houses.
And there are always monuments and sculptures too.
Today was so relaxing. We simply strolled the streets and found an outdoor cafe. I also found a new drink – a Radler = Basically a lemon juice and beer drink.
There are always bikes everywhere!
And most of the time you find a beautiful river. This is the Neckar River and the old Bridge crossing it.
And most of the time in these European cities there are legends:
According to legend, the bronze monkey on Heidelberg’s Old Bridge was meant to remind those who crossed it from either side to look over their shoulders at where they’ve come from. Whether a Heidelberg citizen living inside or outside of the city, it reminded them they were no better than their respective counterpart.
The monkey is said to be good luck. Rubbing the mirror will bring you money. Rubbing his fingers will ensure your return to Heidelberg and rubbing the little bronze mice nearby will bring you fertility.
Before leaving Heidelberg we drove high up the mountain into the forest above the city. I loved walking along the paths in the forest here.
It was a lovely day and I am so glad we are slowing our pace and just enjoying being here in Europe.
My kind of day!
